The Name that Saves

Re-reading the Biblical account of Christ’s birth, one statement is engraved on my mind: “You shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Words of the angel of the Lord to Joseph in Matthew 1:21)

Years ago we read a story of 19 Russians that had been bitten by a “mad wolf”, and how they got cured. To confirm that, I found the following excerpt from a letter to the editor of the Time magazine, dated February 2, 1931, which gives the facts: Number of bitten moujiks: 19. Number of wolves: 1. Moujiks cured: 16. Moujiks dead: 3. The wolf ran amuck in Smolensk province in March 1886. For two days & two nights it wandered, attacking everyone it met. One badly bitten man finally slew the beast with an axe. A Russian physician took the victims to Paris. Pasteur treated 16 of them with a new, intensive treatment (two inoculations daily). The three patients who died were treated by the then ordinary method (one inoculation in several days). The Tsar gave Pasteur a diamond cross of the Order of St. Anne and 100,000 francs for Pasteur Institute.—ED

The version that we have states that in spite of the tremendous pain that they were suffering, they arrived at Paris wrapped in crude bandages and hidden under their fur hats, in search of the remedy they heard would be able to cure them. In their pain and desperation, they repeatedly cried out the only French word they knew: “PASTEUR! PASTEUR!” until they were led to the famous scientist, and ultimately their salvation.

In our world, which has been attacked by a fatal illness much worse than rabies – sin – there is one name, and only one. Whoever cries out to Him with faith will be made whole, and saved for eternity. It is the name of JESUS. The angel of the Lord proclaimed it to Joseph, and we are assured of it in Acts 4:12: “…there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” JESUS…. Praise God for THE NAME THAT SAVES!
