Get high grades. Get on the team. Get into the college of your choice. Get a degree. Get in debt. Get good employment. Get another degree. Get a new car. Get out of debt. Get a bigger house. Get a… and then get a…. and then…
The values of Solomon stand in sharp contrast to those things our society values. Solomon was the wealthiest man of his time, and he knew what it was to “get” things. In Ecclesiastes, chapter 2 he writes: “I made, I built, I gathered, I acquired… I became great and excelled more than all who were before me…whatever my eyes desired, I did not keep from them.” He got. What was his conclusion? We find it in Proverbs 4:7: “Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”
Everything else we might “get” is frosting on the cake. Wisdom and understanding are fundamental. Let’s make sure we “get” our values right.
Prayer: Lord, Help us to make sure that getting Your wisdom and understanding is very high on our scale of values, even though it costs all we have. Amen!
