With his physical body ravaged by a long, hard struggle with cancer, Pastor Arthur was on the front porch of eternity. The last time we visited him, he could no longer speak. He motioned for his dear wife Ruth to bring him his well-worn Bible. His fingers still nimble and his mind and heart focused on eternity, Arthur quickly opened it and pointed to 1st Peter 1:3,4: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled that does not fade away…”
We read that passage out loud and Arthur’s face became radiant as he nodded in anticipation of the eternal inheritance he was on the brink of receiving. Arthur was rejoicing in the living hope that our God of hope had given him, and we rejoiced with him.
As Christ followers, our living hope isn’t simply wishful thinking; it’s rock-solid confidence that carries us all the way to eternity. It is a gift that our God of hope gives all those who trust in Jesus; it permeates our existence.
My prayer for you today is that “…the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)
