“FAST FORWARDING” FOUR GENERATIONS

“Therefore know that the Lord our God, He is God, the FAITHFUL GOD who keeps His covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.”   Deuteronomy 7:9

My paternal grandma was one of nearly a million victims of the encephalitis epidemic of 1920, leaving Grandpa to raise their four young children alone. I was told that every night, when the farm chores were done and dinner was finished, Grandpa sat at the kitchen table and read his well-worn Bible. I wonder if he held fast to the same promises for his children that I do for ours… I’m sure he thanked God for His faithfulness in his own life, but I wonder if he fully understood the far-reaching effects of God’s faithfulness….if it ever crossed his mind that not only his four youngsters (Ernie, Ted, Mildred and George), but his grandchildren (my generation), great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren would all be links in the chain of generations that would also experience God’s mercy, stand on His truth and enjoy His blessings and salvation. If he could have “fast forwarded” four generations to where we are now, he would have understood even more how faithful God is, and seen just how true His promises for our families are! Praise God! They are never ending! He promised that His salvation is from “generation to generation”, and His covenant and mercy “to a thousand generations”!

So as we pray for our children and grandchildren, let’s claim Gods promises. Let’s keep trusting Him to fulfill His promises in them, and be assured that He will still be faithful, even if we fast-forward four more generations…and four more generations….and four more generations…

Here are some promises for our families that we can trust God for:

Psalm 103: 17, 18: “But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children to such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them.”

Psalm 102:28: The children of Your servants will continue, and their descendants will be established before you.”

Proverbs 20:7: “The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.”

Isaiah 44:3: “For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring.”

Isaiah 51:8: “But My righteousness will be forever, and My salvation from generation to generation.”

Isaiah 54:13: “All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.”

It’s an awesome thought: what I’m praying now (or not praying) will go on and on and on.

I was preparing a forum for our Easter Camp on our ministry of parenting and I like the ideas from “generation to generation” as a final blessing and promise to parenting. Good ideas, I think I will use some of your verses!
